Title
From spy to president: The rise of Vladimir Putin
Overview
| VOX | In this 2017 documentary Vox presents Vladimir Putin. He has been in power in Russia since the late 90s, after taking over from Boris Yeltsin. During this time, he made Russia an authoritarian and militaristic society. Before the Berlin wall fell, Putin worked as an undercover spy in east Germany for the Soviet security agency, so-called the KGB. From Putin’s perspective, Russia lost more than 1 million square miles of territory when the Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries. This includes the new Russian Federation. According to Putin, this was the major geopolitical disaster of the century. In fact, he noted that tens of millions of his co-patriots found themselves outside Russian territory. Despite this, the regime of Putin has developed the most effective cyber hacker army in the world and fostered it, using it to wreak havoc in the West. But the choosing of Donald Trump brings new hope for the Putin conception. Trump’s rhetoric has been notably soft on Russia. He could lift sanctions and weaken NATO, potentially freeing up space for Putin’s Russia to become a dominant power once again.
