“Don’t believe everything you see or hear on the Internet”. Today, we present to you an issue that has been very popular these past few years. Deepfake isn’t new, but it’s gotten more attention since the release of several new tools that have made creating deepfakes possible for anyone. Deepfakes are images, sounds, and texts created by artificially intelligent software that are sometimes used maliciously. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “deepfake”, we recommend watching this DW video. It draws attention to the issue and explains how it has affected many sectors. Although deepfake is sometimes used for fun purposes, it is still a serious risk in many sectors. Politicians must be careful with this, as do celebrities, researchers, investigators, accountants, and so on. Briefly, everyone is vulnerable to deepfakes and must be cautious. Although it occurs constantly around us, we are not always aware of it. The video implies that, because it is becoming more difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fake online, the time will come when people automatically assume that what they see in the media is fake. This has the potential to seriously undermine democratic governance. Deepfake compromises the truth, leaving us to wonder what the truth really is.
