Nowadays, it is common in many societies for organizations to strive for maximum profit with the least amount of interference from the government. However, when it comes to making profits in the healthcare industry, the conversation may be different. The healthcare industry shouldn’t be reliant on massive profits. That is a fundamental right. But in innumerable instances, this is still the case. Therefore, integrity has been an important and relevant topic in healthcare. Healthcare consumers are always reliant on providers. That is why the integrity of healthcare providers is critical. Patients’ needs should always come first, and caregivers should not prioritize their own personal gain. In this video, PBS|FRONTLINE discusses the multi-billion-dollar elderly care industry, with about 29,000 residential care facilities operating across the US. It presents a recent investigation from The Center for Investigative Reporting that reveals some of these facilities are profiting by exploiting caretakers, effectively paying them as little as $2 an hour to labor around the clock. This happens at the expense of care as well. But having the owners make huge profits.
