For more than 50 million years, the Amazon rainforest has been a cradle of life. Its pristine forests, however, are increasingly under threat due to illegal gold mining. TechKnow’s Phil Torres heads to La Pampa, the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve, to witness how illegal mining is turning forests into toxic wastelands. There, more than 100,000 acres of rainforest have been cleared.
Last Sunday the Climate Summit in Glasgow started where (almost) all world leaders were present to make big promises to combat climate change. The first pledge from all those countries? An end to deforestation by 2030. Whether that’s a realistic promise remains to be seen, given the lucrative metals that lie beneath the forests in Peru for example. In this documentary, Al Jazeera shows how the trees are cut down, what happens to the gold mined beneath them and why this is not only a problem for the ecosystem, but also for the local residents.
